Duties and Responsibilities of the Parents of the Bride and Groom

When it comes to planning a wedding, the burden usually falls to the bride and the bridal party. However, the parents of the couple can also pitch in and help with the planning process. After all, a wedding is a once in a lifetime event that will be remembered for years to come.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Parents of the Bride and Groom

Mother of the Bride

Most of the time, the mother of the bride is eager as the bride when it comes to the wedding. She is often involved in the planning process and brides often consult their mothers when it comes to finalizing the wedding details. Even if the couple chooses to plan the wedding themselves, the mother of the bride is kept up to date with the progress of the plans.

Aside from helping her daughter with planning her wedding, she also has additional responsibilities. It is up to her to keep the parents of the groom informed about the wedding plans. She coordinates with the mother of the groom about their wedding outfits. She helps out in making up the guest list. It is also her duty to attend the pre-wedding festivities. She also acts as a hostess during the wedding reception. Most importantly, she helps the bride get dressed during the wedding day.

Father of the Bride

The main responsibility of the father of the bride is to give his daughter away. This part of the wedding ceremony is a poignant moment because it symbolizes his blessing of the union of the bride and the groom. It is also a gesture of his acceptance of the groom into his family. Just like the mother of the bride, it is his duty to attend the pre-wedding parties such as the engagement party and the rehearsal dinner. He also makes a speech during the wedding reception. Most importantly, he walks his daughter down the aisle during the wedding procession.

Mother of the Groom

The mother of the groom is not as involved in the wedding planning as the mother of the bride. Nevertheless, she also has her duties to fulfill. It is her duty to contact the bride’s parents when the engagement has been formalized. She helps find wedding suppliers such as florists and caterers. She comes up with the guest list for the groom’s side of the family. She and her husband is also tasked with planning the rehearsal dinner. She also welcomes the guests during the wedding reception along with the parents of the bride.

Father of the Groom

The father of the groom usually takes a backseat in these proceedings. Nevertheless, he must try to help out whenever he can and he should be always available if he is needed in the wedding planning process. Traditionally, he coordinates with the bride’s parents regarding the wedding expenses. He and his wife can offer to pay for some things including the wedding rings, the fees for the celebrant and the honeymoon of the couple. He also stands in the receiving line during the wedding reception to welcome the guests. He also dances with the mother of the bride during the wedding reception. In some cases, he also makes a speech and offers a toast to the couple during the reception.
